Broomfield kicked off and it was quickly noticeable that the pitch was bobbly through the middle, however this didn’t prevent Norsemen from trying to get the ball down and play some football. The away side shaded possession and territorial advantage for the first 15-20 minutes, whilst also dealing well with the pace Broomfield possessed on the counter-attack. One great bit of play down the right involving Os, Ross, Jay and Leroy led to the latter almost finding Darran, only for the defender to produce a last ditch interception at the expense of a corner. There were a couple of half chances from Ross’ long throws which the home team’s defence were struggling to cope with, before the break through came on the half hour. A nice bit of football between Alfi and Kamali led to Leroy being released down the left – he looked up and squared for Darran who had made a great run into the box and the big forward finished in style into the top corner. A great finish and no less than Norsemen deserved.
Half-time Broomfield 0-1 Norsemen.
The second half started in much the same vein, with Norsemen on top and looking the more likely to trouble the scoreboard. The away side won a corner, from which Ross fooled everyone by signalling for the front post and then clearing the back stick to the waiting Jay Davies, whose volley came back off the bar. Olly reacted the quickest and nodded over the keeper for the second. This gave Broomfield a bit of a kick start, and there was some action at the other end. The Broomfield midfielder hit a sweet 30 yarder that was heading into the top corner, only for Zak to produce a flying save, tipping the ball onto the bar and away for a corner. Within two minutes, another Broomfield player hit an equally sweet strike, this time beating Zak but not the cross bar. This bit of pressure from the home side spurred Norsemen back into action – Alfie beat a man in midfield and played the ball down the left to Jay, who cut in and fired a cross into Leroy. The little forward turned, adjusted his body, and fired a left-footed overhead kick into the far corner – an amazing finish. 3-0 up and cruising, Ross Coleman decided he wanted to get in on the scoring. He found himself just inside the penalty box, a nice bit of movement found space and then he leapt like a salmon to meet a left wing cross and flick a header up and over the keeper into the far corner. A wonderful header. However it was at the wrong end, and Zak was the unlucky keeper to be beaten. 3-1 with 5 mins to go.
Any hopes Broomfield had of getting back into the game were extinguished a couple of minutes later when Darran finished smartly after a bit of a scramble, however there was still time for Broomfield to get another consolation goal with a great strike from 20 yards.
Final score Broomfield 2-4 Norsemen.
MOM – some great performances all round. Leroy and Darran led the line well, Ross Coleman dominated centre midfield, and Jay Davies put in a shift and showed real quality on the ball. However for me, Olly Lewis showed his class by putting in a MOM performance for the second week on the trot in an unfamiliar position.
