CURBELO 7th XI v NO GAME The start of another season on Grocers with a home fixture for the 1st team against Old Stationers and a friendly for the 6th XI against Winchmore Hill both resulting in victories. The 5th XI battled out for a 0-0 draw against Bealonians 1st XI by default.
The 1st XI game was a story of two good attacking sides but both with porous defences after missing a host of chances, we found ourselves losing 4-3 with 5 minutes to go, but a couple of scrambled goals from long throws resulted in us getting off to a winning start for the first time in a few years. I think that this division looks particularly weak this season and it is important that we put a good run together early on to establish a good base for a major push for promotion. We are trying to bring the first two teams together as a squad this season, apparently it numbers 38 players at present. It will be interesting to see how that number stands up when the colder weather arrives, but it is a good reward for all the efforts put in by various people during the close season. One yellow card on Saturday is a reasonable start but we must aim for clean sheets in this area if we are to get back in the leagues good books. Once again on Saturday we were outnumbered by supporters of the opposition, another plea to our former players to get up off their arses and watch a good game followed by a friendly couple of pints We start another competitive season with a home League Fixture for the first team against Old Stationers to be played on The Grocers ground on Saturday 5th September.
At this stage we are hopeful of making a better challenge for promotion than last year, with some of last years promoted reserve side moving up a side. There has been a lot of action behind the scenes with new Chairman Barry Ayers together with his Committee working hard to instill new discipline and organisation to the club. We have had a troubled few years and we have to learn from our past mistakes. Better discipline on the field is a must as well as players paying their subs and fines willingly and on time. A code of conduct will be displayed in each dressing room so nobody will be in any doubt as to what is expected of them. We have a great club and wonderful facilities, let's put them to good use and have a great season COYN. |
