Not one of our better weeks the 1st XI met their first defeat of the season, losing a close encounter 3-2. As I had previously warned, the opposition Old Lyonians were up for this fixture and won a very close contest, a nice club according to our Chairman.
The Res XI put in a good performance against a strong Old Meadonians side in the AFA Cup drawing 0-0 after extra time and losing the dreaded penalty shoot out 5-3. The 4th XI travelled to West Wickham in the AFA Cup and lost another close game 3-2. The 5th XI returned to form with a 6-0 win against Broomfield 3rd XI. The high flying 6th XI lost 4-2 to Ally Pally whilst in a close game only split by poor Refereeing. The 7th XI returned to winning ways with a very good 4-0 win against Old Lyonians 5th XI. We seem to have underperformed in cup games this year with only a couple of our lower sides being still involved and what with fewer league games has left our home ground with fewer fixtures to enjoy and stretching our finances, so if any non playing (Vice President) member has forgotten their donation this year then let this be a gentle nudge. COYN!!!

Attending to racing matters on Saturday at Ascot so relying on information from my club reporter.
The 1st XI continue their fantastic start to the season with a 3-0 victory over a competitive AFC Oldsmiths side. leading 1-0 at half time two goals from John Megicks wrapped up their 27th point of the season. The Res XI after last weeks good win lost a close encounter against Ibis Eagles conceding two late goals in a 5-3 defeat. Our very successful 4th XI beat Old Owens 4s in a goalfest winning 8-5.They are top of their league and have an interesting cup tie this week away to West Wickham who are top of the southern section of the same league. Both the 5th & 7th XIs lost 4-3 in their respective fixtures against Old Lyonians 4s & Winchmore Hill 9s. The 1st XI had their first match at home for some weeks where they took on Old Stationers who were attempting to take the first points off us this season.
Last year we missed promotion by underestimating some of our opponents and dropping points, it looked as though the same was happening this year when after some early pressure from us, OS suddenly scored two goals, one a cracker from outside the area. After a half time talk from coach Steve we were a different team in the second half, sharp hardworking, determined and dominated the play. We scored two quick goals to equalise and continued to press and were rewarded with a great winner scored by Chris Morgan direct from a free kick. So our maximum points total remains in place, its going to get harder each week with teams desperate to be the first to take points off us, but if we continue to play with good discipline and Norsemen spirit then we are going to be difficult to beat. A word for OS they are struggling as a club with no school to draw players from and being stuck out in the country in Barnet but their team played well and still backed by some elder statesmen on the touch line. A word also for the referee David Stevenson Snr, he refereed the game as a SAL game should be with a gentle word in the ear rather than a plethora of cards The Res XI once again playing at Grocers needed a win and took the points off highflying AP 2-1 in a close fought game. Steve Morgan is putting together a good but very young team which promises well for the future. The 4th XI and 7th XI games were called off, it was a shame because we had three unused pitches in perfect condition, but despite us offering to swap our opponents declined. The 5th XI gained a Walkover in the AFA Cup due to Old Sedcopians failing to fulfil a team. The 6th XI travelled to Old Stationers 3rd XI and won an entertaining game 9-4 to remain at the top of their league. This is another newly built team with some young blood that we hope will rise through the ranks in good time to see us rebuild a 3rd XI for next season. Another home game for the 1s & 2s this week, it would good to see some support from our elder statesmen. After my upbeat message of last week I am pleased to say it was followed by another good week.
The 1st XI travelled away to play recent newcomers Old Blues and won 2-0. I understand from our coach Steve that the team are improving weekly both in performance and discipline and have been rewarded with winning 21 points from their first seven games, you can't improve on that, long may it continue. The Reserves had no game and on the main pitch the 4th XI entertained the Vamps, this was a great game between two good sides and played in a great spirit with Norsemen winning 4-2, both clubs could be proud of their teams. The 5th XI made the short hop over the A10 to take on the Hill and came away with an excellent 4-1 win, they are strongly challenging to win their league. The 6th XI had a tough home AFA Cup game against Old Finchleians who were in a division above, we lost 5-1 but the score did not reflect the closeness of the game. The 7th XI due to the paucity of league fixtures had a friendly against EBOG's 4th XI which resulted in a good 7-5 victory. This week both the 1st XI and Res XI are at home, a good time to come and see if our good run continues. The last few years for the club have been very disappointing and all our teams are playing in lower leagues than we would have expected a few years ago. But there are strong signs of a recovery afoot this weeks results were very good.
The 1st XI undertook the long journey to Carshalton and played very well to come away with a 3-1 win maintaining their 100% record in their League Programme. The Res XI who are fielding almost a new team from last season drew 2-2 away to EBOG a good result after some setbacks. The 4th XI continued their good run with a 4-0 away win in the Cup against Old Thorntonians. Who said they don't travel??? The 5th XI continued there good run with a 5-3 win against Old Finchleians. T The 6th XI stayed at the top of the Table with a 6-2 win against AP. And last but not least the 7th XI had a great win away to the Hill 5-3. If that's not a good week I dont know what is, lets keep up the good work. WALK TALL YOU BLUE GIANTS!!!! |
