Another quiet day at the club with only one game played largely due to the reasons mentioned last week.
The Res XI after their good win last week faced unbeaten EBOG's in a game where we badly needed the three points to strengthen our bid to avoid relegation. EBOG fielded a very experienced side who dominated the early stages against our much younger team, our defence was too square which enabled them to have several one on ones with our goalie, which they either missed or he saved, they eventually took the lead but within ten minutes we equalised direct from a free kick. A half time talk from Coach Steve reorganised the team somewhat and we began to match them in midfield and eventually took the lead with a good shot and held out by defending well to secure a good win. This was an encouraging result for the Reserves who were well organised by Steve Morgan, they kept their heads despite verbal provocation and with little help from the referee who seemed to have left his cards and watch at home. In our 2 remaining fixtures the 5th XI lost 1-0 to Old Finchleians. The 7th XI had a good away win in the AFA Cup 3-2 against Old Bealonians. There are no league matches now for the next two weeks but we have an inter club game at the club on Boxing day and the bar will be open, so if you want to get away, come along. A Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year to my reader.

A quiet week with only 3 games played, once again we were hit by teams crying off due to shortage of players.
The SAL has a serious problem with some clubs not able to meet their commitments on a regular basis and costing the club a lot of money and the ability to provide regular football for our members. On a more positive note the 1st XI, after their first loss the previous week returned to winning form with a 4-1 victory away to Old Salesians, this club were high flyers only a couple of years ago just shows how important it is to keep your standards up as a fall is never far away. The Res XI who have been playing well recently without getting the results they deserve had a great win 5-1 against Bank of England to whom they had lost by the same score earlier in the season. This win lifted us off the bottom of the table, but we still have a battle ahead as we have played more games than the other stragglers. Our only other game was the 7th XI who had a tough fixture against Old Owens 5th and lost 5-2. No game for the 1st XI this week, the lack of cup football is costing the club dear.
The Res XI faced Winchmore Hill who were relegated from the top division along with us last year, we lost 3-0 but coach Steve watched the game and reported that we played very good football just lacked a goal scorer and a regular goalkeeper, we need them both urgently if we are to avoid a second successive relegation. The 4th XI continued their good form with a convincing win 7-1 against Old Parks. The 5th XI game was postponed at the last moment with Old Stationers Res XI not being able to raise a team. Surely the SAL must realise there is a problem with the League structure.. The 6th XI remained top of their league with a 7-1 win against AP'8s. The 7th XI lost 4-2 to AP'10s. |
