Yet another lovely day for football the firsts made the journey to Beckenham to play on probably the best pitch in the league against HSBC who used to be Midland Bank.
The pitch is just as good as we all remember it and we gave a sparkling exhibition which much impressed the watching officials from the AFA and the SAL. We should have won by more this may cost us when we play better teams. The Thirds continued their poor start losing 4-1 to Poly and the fifths met with their first defeat 5-2 to Winchmore Hill. The sixes beat the Vamps 3-2 and the sevens were held to a 3-3 by the Vamps It’s that time of year again with subs due and with the facilities we offer our subs are quite low. So if you are not prepared to pay up then perhaps you should be playing your football at a much inferior ground or Enfield Playing Fields or even Firs Farm!

What a wonderful summer like day to hold our annual Presidents lunch.
60 people gathered covering many years of being a Norsemen and 6 matches played including a Vets side for the first time in recent memory. The results on the day were excellent the first team had tough opponents in Bank of England who were relegated from Div one last season, this was a very good game played in an excellent spirit and we maintained our 100% record with a 2-1 victory. The Thirds who are in a tough division lost 3-1 to AP and badly need a win to get their season going. The fours had a great win 7-1 away to Old Finchleians and the fifths maintained their good form with a 2-1 win against the Hill. The sixes also had a good win 4-3 against AP. You will note the absence of a Reserves result sadly their “ friendly” against Broomfield was abandoned by the referee. A club of our standing should not get involved in this sort of incident however provoked. The same people seem to get involved each time and we have to ask ourselves do we want these people to continue to put our good name and reputation at risk! The first team took the short trip to the Vamps on Saturday, who were unbeaten in the league, despite the poor state of the pitch we played good football but missed many chances and ran out 1-0 winners.
Against stronger teams we will need to be more clinical in our finishing. The reserves drew 0-0 at home to HSBC and the Thirds had a good away win in the cup 1-0 against Wandsworth Borough, this was a most welcome win after several defeats. The fourths had a great away win against Old Garchonians Reserves 1-0 and the fifths retained their unbeaten record with a 3-1 win at Old Parks. Finally the sevens lost away to Old Parks 1-0 with their star player promoting himself to one of the subs for the first team thankfully for all parties he remained on the bench throughout An all round good performance this week with only 4 goals conceded in 6 games. Next Saturday is Presidents Day with 5 home games including a Vets game in the morning so if you fancy coming along you may even get a beer from the President For the first time in my memory we were left with no home games on Saturday due to Old Owens being unable to field a 4th or 5th team!!!
The first team had an on paper easy cup game away to Old Vaughanians who are in one of the lower division of the AFC and so it proved with a 7-1 victory. The reserves were also on the road and scored a good win away to South Bank, and the Thirds lost away to the same opponents. The sixes I believe won easily but their result was not shown on the SAL web site. On to the all conquering sevens they mauled AP for the second time this season with yet again D Green heavily featured amongst the scorers This week the first team have an interesting cup game away to Crouch End Vamps who head the third division with a 100% record taking on us who have a 100% record in the 2nd division. Something has to give hopefully not us! Back to the good weather again at Hydeside on Saturday, it’s really disappointing that so few of our former members and players come to the ground to enjoy some good quality football cheap beer in a pleasant environment.
We even have a hot dog/hamburger van to feed you. A mixed week suggesting that the main strength of the club is going to be in the top two sides this year with a couple of our lower sides maybe over matched in their leagues. The first team took the long trip to Merton and after falling behind to a second half goal came back with a couple of late goals to secure a 2-1 victory. These are important games to win after a long journey and not a great pitch. The next two games are in the cup in which we have done very badly recently, time for a good run. The reserves with several new players scored an easy fixture in the cup 4-0 against Old Ignations, several players here who can challenge for a first team place. The Thirds and fourths both lost in close games against St James and Winchmore Hill. The fifths drew 2-2 and remain top of their division. The sixth were overmatched against Old Lyonians and lost heavily and the sevens retained their 100% record with a good win against a strong Old Parks team.
